The ancient god of wine and festivity has historically been known by many names such as Liber, Bacchus, Dionysus… and just as his name shifts, so do the stories surrounding him.
Legend has it that as a god who stood for the untamed nature of life, Dionysus wandered the world actively encouraging his followers in the practice of rituals known as “mysteries”.
These “mysteries” were rituals which used intoxicants and other trance-inducing techniques - such as dance and music - to remove inhibitions and social constraints, liberating his followers to return to their natural state of being. As one can imagine, the Dionysian mysterie festivals could quickly get out of control.
In the beginning, these “mysteries” were practiced in secret. But as their numbers grew and word of their ritual festivals spread, the Lawmakers of the day learned of their practices and forbade them from continuing.
While publicly the mysteries ceased, legend states that the Dionysian followers did not disappear but rather simply went “underground”.
Rumors of their hidden mysterious gathering spots swirled for centuries, but one such temple was never found by the public… that is until the early 1900’s, when a curious child stumbled upon an unnatural land formation in the Finger Lakes Region of New York.
Archaeologists worked day and night to unearth the find, now rumored as the “The Lost Ruins”, but a great plague that covered the earth stalled their progress.
To honor what they’ve found and the work that they’ve done, beautiful gardens were created in the image of the temple structure and celebrations once again filled the land.
All is not lost with the original temple, however. One day soon work will begin again and eventually the world will see the true wonders of “The Secret Chambers of Lost Ruins Winery.”
So come and explore this remarkable place – a space that is somehow both old and new. Take part in the mysteries, in the festivities, and most importantly – in the elixirs within!
